YouTube was built in no small part by users uploading copyright clips of British comedy group Monty Python. Ok, it was built by users uploading copyright clips of lots of different media outfits, but nonetheless, the group’s influence on the video sharing site has been huge. This week, they’ve decided to get a piece of the action for themselves, creating an official channel on YouTube so there are “No more of those crap quality videos you’ve been posting. A topic I’ve tackled several times here at Mashable has been the question of Hulu versus YouTube in terms of their advertising strategies. My friend Frederic Lardinois over at ReadWriteWeb brought the topic up today in reference to news from the Financial Times regarding the revenue of the two video business units.  In the past, though, tons of bloggers have taken potshots at YouTube for not realizing the potential of the $1.65 billion investment by Google. Some signs of how President-elect Barack Obama will use his massive Internet following are starting to surface. The President’s weekly radio address, a staple of American politics since the Franklin Roosevelt administration, will be posted to YouTube, starting this week with the Democratic address (the party not in power has also traditionally broadcast a weekly radio soundbite). The videos will also be posted to Change.gov, the President-elect’s transition site that launched last week. According to The Washington Post, the Obama administration is also likely to launch a YouTube Channel for The White House after taking power. As a candidate, Obama (and rival John McCain) made heavy use of YouTube, utilizing the service for broadcasting speeches, campaign rallies, and political commercials. Everyone keeps wondering if and how YouTube will finally manage to monetize its vast traffic, but one has to admit they’re not just idly sitting waiting for a miracle to happen. Their latest idea, unveiled Wednesday, is simple: they’ll sell sponsored video spots for certain search terms. It’s similar to how advertising works on Google itself. An advertiser buys a position for certain keywords; “big game fishing,” for example. Whenever someone types those search terms into YouTube, an advertiser’s sponsored video will pop up above all other videos. This is the logical next step for YouTube. After in-video graphical and text ads, post-roll advertising, as well as regular banners, they pretty much did all they could to the video itself without ruining the user experience. So much for the idea that YouTube and Hulu aren’t direct competitors. The New York Times reports that Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios will start posting full length movies from its catalog on the popular video sharing service. The partnership will be announced today, and viewers will immediately be able to watch shows such as “American Gladiators,” full-length movies like “Bulletproof Monk” and “The Magnificent Seven,” as well as clips from popular movies like “Legally Blonde.” MGM’s movies and shows will be free to watch with the only hassle being some ads which will run alongside the videos. It was this past Thursday, in our review of another review service, when I figured that Google should seriously consider generating automated translations for YouTube clips to build on its relatively young captions capability. Well, today it began to do just that. Before you become giddy for this fresh new option, it must be said that this is Google’s Translate service being worked into the picture. Which means the world flow is more or less abysmal to anyone with a reasonably firm grasp on one language or another. The good news, though, is it can only get better as development progresses. A while ago I laid down a theory that a significant number of users are using YouTube to share data that isn’t videos. Most often, it’s music, and therefore there are a lot of videos on YouTube that consist of a music track and some images slapped together just to make them videos. In a way, it’s untapped potential, because YouTube isn’t doing much to make it easier for users to share music that doesn’t necessarily have an (official) video attached to it. Enter StreamDrag, a simple music search engine that draws its collection from YouTube’s massive database, although it’s not really transparent - or important - to the end user, who doesn’t see the video at all, he just listens to the song.
