Traditional values 2007-05-03 20:08:00 I am writing this letter to support the MPs who are fighting to stop things that are not in line with our traditional values. These include mannequins, obscene posters and witchcraft. We, Arabs, and other Muslims, have strong Islamic values that we treasure and do not like them to be tainted with other cultures. I applaud the MPs who take these things into consideration.Recently there was some news that same-gender schools lead to gay/lesbian tendencies. This is laughable. It is always the right things that look wrong. If, as they say that girls school students show lesbian behaviour, then Bahrain would be filled with gays/lesbians.Please do not blame the schools, but blame the environment that young minds are subjected to; blame the parents and teachers.I urge the authorities to keep track of what the teachers are doing or not doing in schools. Parents leave their kids alone with satellites, Internet, cellphones and generous pocket money. What can we expect from these impressionable min

Gay, Muslim lawyer bucks stereotypes--El-Farouk Khaki says human rights abuses call for a `jihad,' a struggle against injustice 2007-04-28 09:20:00 Gay, Muslim lawyer bucks stereotypes--El-Farouk Khaki says human rights abuses call for a `jihad,' a struggle against injusticeby Nicholas KeungIf you want to understand El-Farouk Khaki's approach to fighting stereotyping and injustice, you can catch a glimpse of it in his vintage attire and unorthodox demeanour in court. His perspectives are largely the product of his own struggle – and ultimate triumph – to reconcile a multi-layered identity as a gay, visible-minority, Muslim, immigrant lawyer."No matter how you slice it, the denial of human rights and dignity (call for) a jihad, a struggle against oppression and injustice," explains the immigration lawyer from his small office on the fringe of Toronto's gay village, at Yonge and Alexander Sts. "Our biggest enemy is our perpetuating invisibility. By being invisible, your existence is denied. "There are many taboo issues around us, but people choose not to acknowledge them. To create a just society, we need to talk about the di
History of Bahrain 2007-04-28 08:12:00 Bahrain has been inhabited by humans since ancient times and has even been proposed as the site of the Biblical Garden of Eden. Its strategic location in the Persian Gulf has brought rule and influence from the Assyrians, Babylonians, Greeks, Persians, and finally the Arabs, under whom the island became Muslim. Bahrain was in the ancient times known as Dilmun, later under its Greek name Tylos, as Awal as well as under the Persian name Mishmahig when it came under the imperial rule of the Persian Empire. The islands of Bahrain, positioned in the middle south of the Persian Gulf, have attracted the attention of many invaders throughout history, such as the Al-Khalifas. Bahrain is an Arabic word meaning "Two Seas", and is thought to either refer to the fact that the islands contain two sources of water, sweet water springs and salty water in the surrounding seas, or to the south and north waters of the Persian Gulf, separating it from the Arabian coast and Iran, respectively. Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Rights in Bahrain 2007-04-28 04:38:00 Bahrain is known as one of the more tolerant Muslim nations in the Middle East, and has recently undergone a period of political liberalization. However, homosexuality remains a crime, and the government has periodically deported expatriates living in the nation for their sexual orientation.Criminal CodeHomosexuality has been illegal in Bahrain since 1956 when, as part of the British empire, it was given the Indian Penal Code. Article 377 of this code made unnatural sexual offences a crime punishable with imprisonment not to exceed ten years, or deportation for twenty years of a fine. The law remains in effect today, and seems to also apply to cases of adultery. However, the law seems to rarely be enforced. For non-citizens, the most likely punishment is deportation rather than a fine or imprisonment. For example, it has been reported that in 2002 the government deported 2,000 gay Filipino workers for alleged homosexual activity and prostitution. In response to questions from parliament Read more:Lesbian
